Our Speedway ride was built in around 1948 by a company called Marshams, but unfortunately its early owners are not yet fully researched. In fact the ride was originally an “Autodrome” which consisted of motor car themed carriages going round an undulating track but after coming into the ownership of the Codona family it was converted into the more popular Speedway ride. Speedways are know generically as “Arks” because they originally had wooden animals instead of motor bikes. The ride in motion was reminiscent of the animals on Noah’s Ark bobbing up and down on the sea.

After leaving Codona's ownership, the ride toured in Ireland for a while before spending a few years at New Brighton on the Wirral. It is from there that I bought the Speedway in 1990 and shortly after that I carried out fairly extensive repairs and improvements, including rewiring, new lighting, new front steps and new top boards. Due to vandalism and exposure to the elements over the years, some important parts of the Speedway were scrapped a few years ago, so the ride will require a complete rebuild if it is ever to operate again.

For a comprehensive history of other Speedway/Ark and Platform rides see the National Fairgrond Achive Resource Our ride is listed in the “Autodromes” section since that is what the ride was originally built as.
